Bin 389 was often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of cabernet sauvignon with the richness of shiraz. Exemplifying the judicious balance of fruit and oak, Bin 389 highlights the generous mid-palate Penfolds in known for.
Cabernet Sauvignon (53%), Shiraz (47%). This wine was matured for 13 months in a combination of new, one year old and older American oak.

The blend is 53 percent cabernet and 47 percent shiraz... Interestingly, this has no McLaren Vale or Barossa fruit, which probably accounts for the increased (but pleasant) mintiness. This vintage represents a welcome return to form for an Australian classic. Aromas of berry, plum, licorice, peppercorn, meat, mint and spicy cedar vanilla oak. On the palate full bodied and intense with flavours of berry, licorice, tobacco, mint and vanilla oak. The tannins are firm and grainy; authoritative, confident and sitting comfortably within the wine. Finishes dry and savoury with excellent length of flavour. A vintage that hoists the flag back to full mast for the archetypal Australian blend.
The 2004 Bin 389 is a true 'Baby Grange' release, as per the original style blue-print. Watch out 1996 and 1998, the 2004 approaches, accelerating in the overtaking lane!
Penfolds has been a pioneer in the world of winemaking since its establishment in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold. The company's success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who have pushed the development of the company to extraordinary, bold new heights. Mary Penfold's reign at the helm of Penfolds saw years of determination and endeavour, experimenting with new methods in wine production. In 1948, Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker and he propelled Penfolds onto the global stage with his experimentation of long-lasting wines - the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. Soon, the medals began flowing, and Grange quickly became one of the most revered wines around the world. In 2012, Penfolds released its most innovative project to date - 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Penfolds continues to hold dear the philosophies and legends that have driven the company's success since its establishment in 1844.
From vineyards in Langhorne Creek, Bordertown, and Padthaway. Above average winter rainfall led into a promising vintage, which was characterised by mild conditions up until February, followed by hot weather conditions throughout March and April. South Australia fared well and produced wines of elegance and intensity.
The nose hints at Grange character, necessitating a re-look at the label/bottle! The supportive oak sits beautifully, seamlessly integrated. Stewed plum flavours meshed with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and whole black peppercorns (not ground). Would nuances of game terrine with pistachio shell be taking it a bit far? Surely not!
