Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay 2016 is the epitome of Australian winemaking excellence, a flagship wine born from the pursuit of perfection. Launched in 1998, Yattarna was the result of one of the most ambitious wine development projects in the country, with the aim of crafting a Chardonnay that would rival the world’s finest. The 2016 vintage continues to build on this legacy, reflecting the evolution of the style while maintaining its foundational commitment to quality, finesse, and elegance.

Yattarna is sourced from the best cool-climate regions in Australia, including Tasmania, Henty, Adelaide Hills, and Tumbarumba. These areas provide the ideal terroir for producing a Chardonnay with complex layers of flavour, from fresh citrus and stone fruits to richer textures and subtle oak influence. The fruit is carefully selected from multiple vineyards, handpicked to ensure only the finest berries are used. Fermented in French oak with wild yeasts, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and regular stirring of the lees, contributing to its creamy texture and elegant mouthfeel. The 2016 vintage, with its careful maturation and unique combination of fruit regions, is poised to age beautifully, offering exceptional longevity with peak drinking between now and 2035.

      Trusted by the professionals

Light to medium straw-yellow colour, with a pronounced nutty, slightly toasted nut bouquet, showing more oak than the Reserve Bin 17. The palate is rich and concentrated, velvet-smooth and fleshy with great depth and extract. Tremendously long carry. A brilliantly balanced, powerful wine, which is just starting out on its career and will undoubtedly reward cellaring and show much more character and complexity in a few years. Great potential.

      — Huon Hooke, 96 Points

From Tasmania, Henty, Adelaide Hills and Tumbarumba, matured for 8 months in French Barriques (35% new). Opens with a subtle play of Granny Smith apple, grapefruit, barrel ferment and acidity, none blurring the crystal line of purity. A distinctive style, remarkable for its consistency.

      — James Halliday, 95 Points

Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay. Bin 144. The Tasmania, Henty, Adelaide Hills and Tumbarumba regions all contributed grapes. 35% new French oak for eight months. The first vintage was from the 1995 vintage; we've come a long way with Yattarna. It now stands pre-eminent. The grandest wines are often the most surly, and this release is. It will come around in its own good time. It's a tight, powerful, brooding wine; gravity is its middle name. All the screws have been tightened and re-tightened; you get the feeling the winemaking team kept torque wrenches handy. The days will come and go; this wine will stride on. Grapefruit and toast, flight and fig. A show of spice. Majestic.

      Penfolds

Penfolds has been a pioneer in the world of winemaking since its establishment in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold. The company's success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who have pushed the development of the company to extraordinary, bold new heights. Mary Penfold's reign at the helm of Penfolds saw years of determination and endeavour, experimenting with new methods in wine production. In 1948, Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker and he propelled Penfolds onto the global stage with his experimentation of long-lasting wines - the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. Soon, the medals began flowing, and Grange quickly became one of the most revered wines around the world. In 2012, Penfolds released its most innovative project to date - 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Penfolds continues to hold dear the philosophies and legends that have driven the company's success since its establishment in 1844.

      Tasting notes

      NOSE
Citrus, White Peach & Subtle Oak

A bouquet of citrus fruits, particularly lemon zest and lime, followed by the soft sweetness of white peach and a touch of almond. Subtle oak nuances add complexity, with hints of lightly toasted French oak adding depth to the aromatic profile.

      PALATE
      Rich, Complex & Balanced

Rich and full-bodied, yet beautifully balanced by its crisp acidity. Flavours of ripe citrus, stone fruits, and green apple are complemented by a silky mouthfeel, with the oak contributing a creamy texture and layers of complexity. The wine is structured, with a lively, mineral-driven backbone that carries the fruit flavours gracefully across the palate.

      FINISH
      Long, Elegant & Lively

The finish is long and elegant, with a lingering minerality that reflects the wine's cool-climate origins. Subtle spice from the oak complements the fruit and adds a layer of sophistication, leaving a clean, refreshing aftertaste that invites another sip. The wine's bright acidity ensures a lasting finish that will only improve with age.
