In 2022 the Bin 407 wears its Cabernet credentials loud and proud. The season left winemaker, Andrew Hales, spoiled for choice with exceptional fruit from across a range of soils and climates. A wine that celebrates the synergy of the blend. A great year for this marquee Penfolds Bin wine. The core multi region Cabernet Sauvignon is undeniably sweet/rich yet sophisticated. The wine opens expansively - firm in structure yet big and glossy on approach. Tannins are remarkably balanced; they assert their presence without detracting from the lush blackcurrant fruit at its heart. A hint of Sarsaparilla adds an unexpected twist that lingers into the finish. Bravo.

First released in 1993 with the 1990 vintage, Bin 407 was produced in response to the increasing availability of high quality cabernet sauvignon fruit. Inspired by Bin 707, Bin 407 offers varietal definition and approachability, yet still with structure and depth of flavour. This is a textbook definition of cabernet sauvignon - varietally expressive Bin 407 highlights the rewards of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-region  blending, with a core of ripe fruit supported by sensitive use of American and French oak. The grapes for this release were sourced from Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills. 12 months in French (25% new) and American (12% new) oak hogsheads.

Penfolds has been a pioneer in the world of winemaking since its establishment in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold. The company's success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who have pushed the development of the company to extraordinary, bold new heights. Mary Penfold's reign at the helm of Penfolds saw years of determination and endeavour, experimenting with new methods in wine production. In 1948, Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker and he propelled Penfolds onto the global stage with his experimentation of long-lasting wines - the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. Soon, the medals began flowing, and Grange quickly became one of the most revered wines around the world. In 2012, Penfolds released its most innovative project to date - 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Penfolds continues to hold dear the philosophies and legends that have driven the company's success since its establishment in 1844.

      Trusted by the professionals

From a vintage that Peter Gago ranks even marginally above the very impressive 2021 in Coonawarra, this is a Bin 407 that delivers a core of compact, textbook blackcurrant, cassis and blackberry fruit, set to a framework of strong, fine-grained tannins, limestone mineral tannins and the bright acidity of cool nights. French and American oak deepen tannin presence and contribute high cocoa dark chocolate character. An enduring Bin 407 of great character, endurance and grandeur.

      — Tyson Stelzer, 96 Points

Very deep, dense purple colour; intense sweet floral blackcurrant aroma, cassis, blueberry and violets. The wine is intense and full-bodied, robustly structured and ripe, with masses of tannins and concentrated flavour and texture. Quite powerful and long, a very serious Bin 407. (Coonawarra, Padthaway, Wrattonbully, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley. Aged in French oak - 25% new - and American - 11% new).

      — Huon Hooke, The Real Review, 95 Points

Those cool bay leaf notes, that ooze of blackcurrant, that beautiful integration of olives and leaves in among the sweet rip of curranty fruit. There’s a powdery cocoa/chocolate note here but it’s so neatly integrated, and is a positive anyways. This is a lovely Bin 407, structured, fresh and, in its own way, effortless.

      — Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, 94 Points
