Product Description
The Yangarra Old Vine Grenache 2023 showcases the best of McLaren Vale’s terroir with a wine that is as complex and elegant as it is rooted in history. Sourced from gnarly, un-irrigated bush vines planted in 1946, this exceptional Grenache hails from a deep sandy dune known as The Beach, situated atop the North Maslin Sands geological formation. These old vines, the heart and soul of Yangarra’s vineyard, produce a wine that is perfumed, full of character, and effortlessly graceful.
The 2023 vintage is a fine example of this Old Vine Grenache’s remarkable structure and complexity, with a signature tannin profile that promises longevity. The wine offers an abundance of rich, ripe fruit balanced by a delicate and expressive acidity. With consistent praise from critics, the 2023 release has already garnered high accolades, including 96 points from Marcus Ellis of Halliday Wine Companion, 95 points from Campbell Mattinson of The Wine Front, Ray Jordan of Winepilot, and Ryan Montgomery of JamesSuckling.com. A wine to savour now or cellar for years to come, the Yangarra Old Vine Grenache 2023 is a testament to the unique qualities of the McLaren Vale and the meticulous care given to each vintage.

Vineyard | 2023 Yangarra Grenache
The 2023 growing season at Yangarra was influenced by higher-than-average rainfall, leading to cool, wet conditions through Spring. These conditions resulted in balanced canopies and lower yields, setting up a promising vintage. The cooler weather, influenced by La Niña, continued throughout the season and persisted during harvest. The winemaking team optimized vineyard practices, including shoot thinning and leaf removal, to enhance airflow, reduce mildew, and increase sun exposure. These efforts, combined with the cooler temperatures, contributed to wines that are expected to be delicate, balanced, and refined.
The 2023 Yangarra Old Vine Grenache was hand-picked from 13.3 hectares of un-irrigated, 1946-planted bush vines between March 17 and 24. After sorting, 50% of the fruit was crushed, and 50% was kept as whole berries. Wild yeast fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks, with a gentle pump-over regime to manage tannin extraction. The wine was then aged in a combination of French and Austrian oak foudre, puncheons, ceramic egg, and amphora, all contributing to its complexity. Certified Organic and Biodynamic, the wine was bottled in February 2024, ensuring the preservation of its purity and potential for aging.
