The low yields from 2024 meant the vines put their energy into a smaller crop, giving intense flavours with striking natural acidity. There is concentration and texture on the mid-palate with flavours of Tahitian lime, florals and a touch of nettle. Fresh, bright and expressive. Showcasing the carefully selected sites and hand harvesting during the small window of perfect ripeness.

The fruit comes from Shaw + Smith's estate vineyards at Balhannah and Lenswood, complemented by fruit from a small number of highly valued growers. In the cellar grapes are carefully pressed and fermented at cool temperatures to lock in the aromatics, and protected from oxygen throughout. A little time in tank on yeast lees followed, helping to build palate texture and complexity.

The 2024 is the 35th vintage that Shaw + Smith has made. It has become known as a benchmark for Adelaide Hills, and Australian, Sauvignon Blanc. This wine is as an great aperitif or serve with seafood. Ideal temperature is 6-8°C. Best drunk within 18 months of bottling.

    Trusted by the professionals

Perhaps one of Australia's most famed sauvignon blancs with a seemingly unnerving level of quality for the pricepoint. No slouch here, a zesty, fresh, bright and crisp rendering of the variety. Resplendent with passionfruit, just-ripe pineapple, lime and cut-grass characters between the bouquet and palate, very even, flows well, finishes with decent length and a light chalky pucker. Just so, done well, easy drinking and moderately complex to boot.

    — Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion, 93 Points.

I love this wine. It tastes the same every year, which is impressive considering the relative size of it. So, this 2024 Sauvignon Blanc leads with juniper and cassis, green apples, white-topped strawberries, nashi pear and snow peas. In the mouth, it is tightly coiled, fresh and zippy, with a distinct salsa verde (green chili, coriander) character to close. This is very good.

    — Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate, 92 Points.

This Shaw & Smith Sauvignon Blanc 2024 is very fresh, which is unsurprising given it was grapes just a few months ago, but not angular. It’s more grassy than tropical, with a bit of black texta and pyrazine early picked/unripe fruit character, but also plenty of passionfruit and cut melon. You have to dig beyond the just-bottled banana esters to get a complete view, but importantly, the acidity isn’t unripe; it’s just fresh. The intensity is next level, though, cutting a swathe through everything like the freshmaker 12% alcohol wine it is meant to be, and you come away feeling enlivened rather than attacked (which some young Sauv Blanc can be). A really good release (and maybe even better than last year), from what will ultimately be a greenish vintage.

    — Australian Wine & Drinks Review

There’s a good swing of flavour to this release. It’s quite estery and quite tropical, with citrus in support and modest but noticeable lemongrass characters. It’s clearly identifiable as SB, but it’s not in your face about it. It’s fresh, it has flavour, it’s pretty and it’s well balanced.

    — Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, 91 Points.

    Shaw + Smith

Shaw + Smith was founded in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw, with a focus on producing wines that reflect the cooler climate of the Adelaide Hills. They specialise in varieties that thrive in the region, including Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Shiraz. The winery owns three vineyards located in Lenswood, Piccadilly, and Balhannah, each carefully managed to yield the best possible fruit.

With a commitment to sustainability, Shaw + Smith emphasises vine and soil health while maintaining low yields. This hands-on approach, along with state-of-the-art facilities at their Balhannah winery, ensures complete control over the winemaking process, allowing the team to capture vibrant, modern expressions of their varieties and terroir.

Since their first vintage in 1990, Shaw + Smith has grown into one of Australia’s most respected wineries. Their investment in a state-of-the-art winery and tasting room, completed in 2000, has allowed them to continue raising the bar in quality and innovation.
