In 1995, he decided to change paths as follow in his fathers footsteps to become a potter. Ceramic artists in Japan give their Kiln (Kama in Japanese) names and this becomes the name that their work goes by. Mitsuhiro-san named his Kiln Kumano Aiga Kama. This name comes from the region where it is located in a very mountainous part of Wakayama prefecture. He digs all his own clay and experiments with locally sourced wood and vegetation to make his glazes. Using traditional methods and striving for beauty, his works are meant to blend into and become an integral part of their users lives.

These items are all one of a kind glaze & clay combinations in shapes created specifically for the Australian market. A Katakuchi is shaped like a bowl and has a pouring spout on it’s side and is designed to serve Sake directly into a ‘Choko’ or ‘Guinomi’ cup.

These pieces are made by hand by Matsuda-san himself. Any slight irregularities in size, glaze and texture reflect the artisan nature of these products and should be treated as part of the uniqueness of such items.
