The Savaterre Chardonnay 2023 is a remarkable expression of refined power, showcasing a vintage that embodies both finesse and precision. Crafted from a small crop of mature, close-planted vines, this Chardonnay captures the exceptional ripening conditions of the 2023 vintage—long warm days paired with cool nights, allowing for slow ripening and optimal development of the fruit. The wine is seductively tight and coiled in its youth, offering complex layers of aromas and flavours that will continue to evolve over the next 20 years. This vintage delivers a harmonious balance between intensity, elegance, and focus, with exceptional ageing potential that promises to reveal multiple facets as it matures.

Bright medium-light yellow colour; aromas of matchstick/gunflint reduction overlying grapefruit/citrus and biscuit nuances. In the mouth, very intense flavours of tightly focused but generously proportioned citrus/grapefruit and smoked charcuterie - impressively deep and very long lasting. A great chardonnay of terrific refinement and formidable power
A double wow kind of chardonnay, such is the level of deep concentration and the purity of flavour and delivery. Shows a sophisticated side, complex in construction and taste, led by white peach, nectarine, grapefruit pith and peel, spice, and a savoury almond influence that lifts both aromatically and flavour-wise. Walks, as ever, a fine line between generosity and fineness, the latter winning the day with some scintillating tangy acid drive in place. And the best part? This still has a long, long journey ahead - Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion
Lots of struck match that subsides given some air, white peach, citrus, almond, some spice and Japanese ginger. Tight, bright and spicy, grapefruity, lovely acid balance, mid-palate bite and intensity, though it's a discreetly flavoured wine, and the finish is very long. There's some almond creaminess in the mix too. It's finer and less flavour packed than some of the prior vintages, but gee I love its delicacy. Superb
The astonishingly individual, beautifully concentrated and al-dente structured Chardonnay is one of my favourite Victorian Chardonnays. Keppell Smith wines are brilliant.
Savaterre is positioned on an elevated site with amphitheatre views across the King Valley in the rolling peaks and valleys of Beechworth. Located across the road from Giaconda, the site was discovered in 1996 by Keppell Smith, owner and winemaker. The close-planted vineyard is on ancient granitic soils at 440 metre (above sea level) and blessed with mild summer days, cool evenings thanks to the lofty elevation of the Victorian Alps. Viticulture follows low input principles and yields are less than two tonnes/acres. In the cellar, Kepp employs Burgundian techniques with the aid of indigenous yeasts. Each wine, be it Chardonnay, Pinot Noir or Shiraz has individuality and striking concentration. Savaterre's well structured Chardonnay is matured in generous new and seasoned tight grained French oak for up to 19 months. Chardonnay undoubtedly Savaterre’s hero. The Pinot Noir is deep and layered with cherry stone/chocolate aromas and plenty of richness and flavour, and shrewdly bottle aged before release. Finally the Shiraz, or should we say Syrah? Always highly perfumed with distinct red fruit preserve and floral character. Mid weight, velvety, seamless and almost pinot-like in its vibrancy and weightlessness. Super fine tannins and in a neat frame.
At Savaterre, winemaking is rooted in the respect for the land and the belief that great wines start in the vineyard. The estate embraces sustainable, organic viticulture, focusing on maintaining a harmonious balance between the vines and their environment. Keppel Smith’s philosophy in the winery centres on minimal intervention, allowing nature to express itself freely. By using indigenous yeasts and avoiding filtration or fining, Savaterre wines are crafted to showcase their terroir with purity and depth. The aim is to produce wines that stand the test of time while remaining approachable and true to their roots.
A sophisticated blend of lime blossom, toasted hazelnut, white nectarines, pink grapefruit, and subtle hints of bee’s wax and sandalwood. Layers of richness and complexity.
On the palate, the wine presents a sophisticated and elegant texture, with a deep intensity that showcases its old-world structure. Flavours of ripe citrus, white peach, and almond creaminess are framed by bright acidity, offering a finely balanced and long-lasting finish.
The finish is long and satisfying, with a delicate creaminess that lingers. The wine’s precise structure and vibrant acidity ensure a lasting, fresh aftertaste, showcasing its potential for long-term ageing.
