Vietti says it best, "Perbacco was and still is one of the most important bottles in the history of Langhe for being able to tell the story of this land to many people around the world, while delivering amazing quality at the same time."
Perbacco is made from 100% Nebbiolo parcels all planted in the Barolo region from vines (average 35 years old) and then declassified and bottled under the Langhe D.O.C. designation. Your very own backstage pass to Barolo. The fruit comes from the following Barolo sites: Bricco Boschis, Liste, Brunella, Rocchettevino, Pernanno, Ravera di Monforte and Scarrone. Luca and wife Elena give the Langhe Perbacco as much love and attention in the vineyard and cellar as they would for their top tier Barolo Castiglione.
Stylistically the fruit selection for the Perbacco favours more open and approachable characters than what is selected for Barolo. Even after 2 years of maturation in Slavonian oak botti cask, the Perbacco Langhe Nebbiolo boasts a superb core of fruit and but with more pliable tannins. It's fruity with hints of mint, spices and raspberry. The palate is round, elegant tannins add to a long, refined finish. Robust, intense, powerful yet approachable in youth, becoming complex, elegant with time in bottle. We recommend 3-5 years in bottle before opening, the great news is we have already done the cellaring for you. With that said, this happily cellar for years to come.
Delving deeper into the winemaking, the primary fermentation lasts around 3-4 weeks at controlled temperature, followed by malolactic fermentation in steel tanks and/or barriques. Each parcel is processed and aged separately, until the moment when the lots that will be used for Langhe Nebbiolo and those that will continue to age for Barolo Castiglione, are selected. Regarding maturation, after malolactic fermentation, the aging continues in wood barriques and large Slavonian botti for about 18-20 months, at the end of which it is blended in steel for bottling.

The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is an especially nervy edition of the Perbacco, the result of a significant presence of Monforte fruit in the blend. Notes of red fruit, orange peel and white pepper sculpt the 2021, finishing with notable tension.
This wine opens with an expressive nose, exuding macerated red cherries, dried roses and sweet and savory spices. The palate unfolds with rounded and lush loads of cherry, where well-integrated tannins create a harmonious structure, offering a delightful and balanced profile.
We owe thanks to Carlo Vietti who started the Vietti winery at the end of the 1800s. Situated, to this day, right in the heart of the Langhe, on the highest point of the medieval village of Castiglione Falletto. Mario Vietti, Carlo's son, returned in 1917 after many years from living in the United States, and took the reins of the company, armed with the knowledge of modern techniques he elevated the winery to produce higher-quality wines. By the end of the 1950s, daughter Luciana Vietti had inherited the winery, together with her husband Alfredo Currado an oenologist and fellow art lover, they merged their knowledge of wine with art and culture. Since 1974 certain Vietti wines have been dressed with specially-designed original works (lithographs, xylographies, etchings, silkscreens, linocuts) inspired by the wine of that particular vintage.
From the beginning Vietti has been about commitment and vision, culture and passion. These are the keywords that have contributed to the growth of the Vietti winery and brand, universally recognised today among the best Italian wine labels. The path of quality is traced, thanks to the respect for tradition and careful experimentation, where man and earth have always been able to dialogue. The intellectual, professional, and prospective legacy of Alfredo Currado and Luciana was taken up first, during the 80s, by their son-in-law Mario Cordero and then, starting from the 90s, by their son Luca Currado Vietti, subsequently accompanied by his wife Elena.
In 2016, the Krause Family purchased Vietti. Luca Currado Vietti and wife Elena, continued to process and market the wines producing their final vintage in 2021. Vietti has extended the winemaking properties with new, renowned crus in the denomination of Barolo and Barbaresco. In the Colli Tortonesi area, thanks to the purchase of vineyards, the production of Timorasso had its beginning. As in the past, Vietti maintains those founding values - commitment and vision, culture and passion. The same values that animated Carlo Vietti at the beginning, and all his successors.
The grapes are grown in various selected vineyards sites mostly in the Barolo and Barbaresco area. In 2021 the Nebbiolo harvest began in the final days of September, reaching optimal ripeness in the second week of October. The grapes were healthy, with peak phenological maturity aided by the lower temperatures and the contrasting day-night temperatures noted from the second half of September onwards. In terms of quantity, crop loads were optimal and well-balanced, with visibly smaller berries than last year - the latter often a marker of superior quality. These factors resulted in a strong polyphenol content, essential in order to produce wines of structure and balance intended for lengthy ageing. In conclusion, despite the 2021 vintage being distinguished by a succession of significant climatic events, like late frosts, storms and hail in summer, as well as drought, remarkable results have been achieved in terms of the quality of the grapes, due in part because the yields were reduced. The reds of 2021 are nervy and well sculpted. Those those drinking sooner than latter, air time makes a world of difference, a minimum of 3-5 years in bottle will yield great results.
