Schubert joined Penfolds as a messenger boy in 1931 and by 1948, he became Penfolds' first Chief Winemaker. In the latter part of 1950, Schubert was sent to Europe to investigate winemaking practices in Spain and Portugal. On a side trip to Bordeaux, Schubert was inspired and impressed by the French cellared-style wines and dreamed of making 'something different and lasting' of his own. Combining traditional Australian techniques, inspiration from Europe and precision winemaking practices developed at Penfolds, Schubert made his first experimental wine in 1951. In 1957, Schubert was asked to show his efforts in Sydney to top management, invited wine identities and personal friends of the board. To his horror, the Grange experiment was universally disliked and Schubert was ordered to shut down the project. Max continued to craft his Grange vintages in secret, hiding three vintages '57, '58 and '59, in the depths of the cellars. Eventually, the Penfolds board ordered production of Grange to restart, just in time for the 1960 vintage. From then on, international acknowledgment and awards were bestowed on Grange, including the 1990 vintage of Grange, which was named Wine Spectator's Red Wine of the Year in 1995. Today, Grange's reputation as one of the world's most celebrated wines continues to grow. On its 50th birthday in 2001, Grange was listed as a South Australian heritage icon, while the 2008 Grange vintage achieved a perfect score of 100 points by two of the world's most influential wine magazines. With every new generation of Penfolds winemakers, Max Schubert's remarkable vision is nurtured and strengthened.

The Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 2012 is a wine that truly embodies the reputation of Australia's most famous wine. With its deep color, this wine offers intense paneforte, dark chocolate and dark blackberry aromas, with lifted roasted chestnut, mocha, English-toffee aromas and notes of sweet tobacco, dried roses, shellac and frankincense. The wine is superbly concentrated, with wonderful presence, structure and density. It is plush in scale yet possessing lovely energy and structure, making it a truly transcendent and powerfully expressive Grange that harks back to Max Schubert's original blueprint. This wine is dense, expansive, rich and voluminous, with all elements in perfect symmetry. Its aromatic complexity, generosity and suppleness are reminiscent of the early 1960s, making it a wine that has to be in the pantheon of all-time great vintages. Unbelievably good to drink now, this wine is a great indication of its lasting quality, but it is recommended to leave it for a minimum of ten years if possible. This wine has a drinking window of 2026-2080.

Very deep, dark red colour with a tinge of purple and a hint of black. Black olive, creosote, savoury, vanilla, chocolate and mocha aromas, touches of smoked smallgoods. The palate is full-bodied but it''s not a blockbuster. Soft and fleshy, smooth and supple, already showing a glimpse of the excitement and fascination that will follow in its maturity. The finish is all harmony, despite the flood of tannin: soft, savoury, powdery tannin. The components are all in great harmony so that no one feature stands out. The wine''s balance and seamlessness are impressive. I sense this could be a top-level Grange, and may score another point when it's mature. - Huon Hooke, 98+ Points

A transcendent and powerfully expressive Grange harking back to Max Schubert's original blueprint... On the nose, it offers a powerful and intense aroma of mocha, cedar and liquorice which is perfectly balanced with smoky oak characters. The palate is rich and extravagant, with complex flavors of mocha, dark chocolate, dark berry and herb fruit, all complemented by dense and ripe tannins. The finish is chalky firm, but superbly long and flavorful. This wine is a great Grange that is still on the ascendancy, and it has rightfully earned its red star rating in the Penfolds Rewards of Patience, Sixth edition. As Australia's most famous wine, Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz is known for its superb fruit complexity and flavor richness. This wine is exquisitely perfumed and concentrated, combining the intensely rich fruit and ripe tannins of Shiraz with the fragrance and complementary nuances of new, fine-grained American oak. In some years, a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon is added to enhance the aromatics and palate structure. It bugs me to see the wine in this state – as a glass-to-glasser in its infancy it is adamantine in this incarnation. Here, we as wine writers, are given the job of soothsayers; will it live for decades, undoubtably, will it further weave and show the kind of intellectual edifice for which this acolyte of wines is renowned, I reckon. It’s as impressive as I have ever seen new release Grange and a treatise to the work and machinations of winemaking. However, it also manages to toe a line that represents a manifestation of the old school sense of brooding, pent up muscle-and-brawn, while showing the lattice-work of modern ripeness and tannin flex. A fountain of youth forged from vineyard and fruit selection. There is a quiet awe at hand, but here is the consumer advocate in sotto voce, as this is a wine that strays from where current pleasures lie for me. In fact it’s beautiful. Showy vanillin, coffeed, toasty oak is the first impression – as you’d expect of a Grange – though it’s neither syrupy nor malty. The big surprise with this release though is that it doesn’t have the bigness of tannin that some (or most) Grange releases boast. Is this a bad thing? In this case, no – because the balance of this 2005 is brilliant. So too is the dark fruit power motoring through the finish. It’s a wine of conviction. It knows its game and it plays to its strengths. This 2008 is a release that illustrates perfectly what Grange is, and does. Importantly, style aside, it is a wine of enormous tannic power and quite remarkable length, and while we all might disagree on style we all agree that great wine is characterised by its length and, usually, by its ability to perform in the cellar. Revealing a saturated purple color, it’s seemingly more forward and seductive than past great vintages, which I suspect is due to the incredible purity of fruit as well as the wine’s flawless balance than any change in winemaking or stylistic shifts. I also think the acidity is healthy, and the 2015 tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol, which is certainly in the sweet spot, if not tame, for beautifully ripe Syrah these days. A blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 20 months in new American oak hogsheads, it offers an extraordinary perfume of sweet crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, camphor, Asian spices, liquorice, and wildflowers. This is followed by a full-bodied, powerful yet incredibly seamless and elegant Shiraz that has no hard edges, a big, dense mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Coming close to rivalling the 1986, which has always been a benchmark vintage of Grange for me, the 2015 offers a more polished, elegant, approachable style. The company's success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who have pushed the development of the company to extraordinary, bold new heights. Mary Penfold's reign at the helm of Penfolds saw years of determination and endeavour, experimenting with new methods in wine production. In 1948, Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker and he propelled Penfolds onto the global stage with his experimentation of long-lasting wines - the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. Soon, the medals began flowing, and Grange quickly became one of the most revered wines around the world. In 2012, Penfolds released its most innovative project to date - 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon.

Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 2010 is a wine that continues the legacy of Australia's most celebrated wine, Grange. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia. Grange utilizes fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes, resulting in a unique Australian style that is now recognized as one of the most consistent of the world's great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy. The vintage conditions for the Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 2010 were healthy winter rains in the Barossa Valley, followed by a dry and mild-to-warm spring which aided budburst. Consistent and slower growth continued and overlaid flowering and fruit set. December temperatures were much cooler, offering vines ideal growing conditions leading to veraison in early January. Summer rainfall came early, which was followed by dry, warm weather, alleviating any disease concerns. Mild conditions followed during harvest, with yields in some vineyards below average due to the dry season overall. The fruit from these regions showcases excellent colour, concentrated flavour development and integrated tannins hallmarks of a stand-out 2010 vintage.

The Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 2010 is a wine that showcases the excellence of Australian winemaking. This wine is a blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Magill Estate vineyards in South Australia. The wine has been matured for 17 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads, which has added complexity and depth to the wine. The Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 2010 has a black core with a purple rim, indicating its depth and intensity. On the nose, the wine is intense, with an immediate barrel-ferment propulsion - sweet and candied, with a peaty, iodine, green olive base. Beneath this, a barely-concealed swirl of Vegemite yeast extract, concentrated salt-paste - laced with paprika, oregano flower and thyme. A slurry of cocoa powder, a scented waft of black pudding and a splash of nori-roll temporarily balance this aromatic equation. But then, a minute or two later all changes and the aromas become even more complex and captivating. On the palate, the wine has a dense, paste-like texture and weight with a balsamic lift that is unleashed. Tannins focus on the roof of the mouth, laden with an additional film of (85% cacao) dark chocolate mocha. A mix of quince and sesame-paste laden with basted meats and saturated stewed plum, boysenberry, blueberry. The wine is tightly bound and you need to wait for decompression to fully appreciate its complexity. The wine is complete, confident and convincing with a long satisfying finish. The Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 2010 is a wine that is sure to impress any wine enthusiast. It represents the best of Australian winemaking, with its complex flavours, balanced structure and powerful expression of the South Australian terroir. The wine is at its peak drinking between 2018 and 2060, indicating that it has a long life ahead of it. I adore 2008 Grange and, tasting them together, 2010 is even deeper and more vibrant, exuding another dimension of distinguished grace, precision, concentration, scaffolded structure and seamless, enduring persistence. There is a coiled reticence to the bouquet, skirting black plum, liquorice and dark chocolate, opening into breathtaking violet fragrance. The palate is unyielding, yet immensely structured. Magnificently voluptuous, yet elegantly coiled and bright. Silky and irresistible, yet untouchable and enduring. Tannins are a revelation, with a finesse and a chalk-fine texture impossible for such a resilient and powerful frame. To his horror, the Grange experiment was universally disliked and Schubert was ordered to shut down the project. It has all the elements that you come to expect but still you have to sit back and marvel that so much can be going on inside one wine. Firstly, it simply ain’t Grange unless it is wearing its traditional American oak coat, and this iteration isn’t going to shy away from that. But perhaps it is the generosity across the board of South Australia’s 2018 vintage that gathers in 18 months of barrel maturation, puts shape to its broad-shouldered dark fruits, turns oak notes into chocolate and sarsaparilla characters on one side of the brain and beef and mushroom braise in the other. The winemaking process involves great attention to detail; from selecting the best possible grapes sourced from low-yielding, old Shiraz vines through to fermentation and fastidious oak maturation. He was not born in Burgundy, but winemaking is his true vocation. His love for wine comes from his father, a gourmet with a passion for fine wines. Even as a young boy, Jacques would meet the greatest winegrowers of the time in the company of his father. At the age of 25, after a few years working for the family-owned biscuit manufacturing company, he decided to move on from the business world. During the 1966 and 1967 harvests, he learned winemaking with Gérard Potel at the Domaine de la Pousse d'Or in Volnay. In 1968, he bought the Domaine Graillet in Morey-Saint-Denis, which he renamed Domaine Dujac (a pun on his first name, meaning the Estate that Jacques owns). In 1973, he married Rosalind, who quickly became a key member of the team.

Domaine Dujac in Burgundy was acquired by Jacques Seysses in 1967. The domaine in Morey-St-Denis had 4 hectares of vineyards and he has subsequently built it up to 11.5 hectares. Domaine Dujac now includes holdings in Clos de la Roche, Clos St-Denis, Bonnes-Mares, Echézeaux and Charmes-Chambertin . "Use knowledge and technology to counter accidents - for example, bad weather - but, if all is going well, don't interfere," says Seysses and this principle guides much of what happens in the vineyards and the cellars. Dujac wines are neither filtered nor fined and all of his premiers and grands crus are aged in 100% new oak. These are wines of the very highest order.

The first vintage, 1968, was one of the worst years on record so the wines were sold off in bulk, but 1969 was an entirely different matter, putting the domaine firmly on the map. In 1973 Jacques married Rosalind Boswell, a Californian girl who came to work the vintage and stayed for life. The first two of their three children, Jeremy (born 1975), Alec (1977) and Paul (1980) are now involved in the business, as is Jeremy’s wife Diana, also Californian, and a trained oenologist. In 2000 Jeremy Seysses also inaugurated, with his father, a small scale negociant business known as Dujac Fils et Père. The domaine has expanded over the years as additional parcels of vineyard became available, culminating in the acquisition of some exceptional vineyards from Domaine Thomas-Moillard in 2005. In 1987 the domaine moved to lutte raisonée, the reasoned application of treatments, and from 2001 to organic farming. Today 75% of the domaine, including all premier and grand cru vineyards, is farmed organically with experiments also along biodynamic lines.

Jacques Seysses is a leading advocate of including stems in the fermentation process, as much so as to avoid bruising the grapes during the de-stemming process as for a desire to include the stems themselves. However each vintage is treated according to its merits and the ripeness of the stems. The cellars in Morey St Denis have been extended in recent years to improve cellaring conditions. The barrels can now be kept at a cooler ambient temperature, enabling the malolactic fermentation to happen later and for the wines to be racked less frequently.

The Clos de la Roche Grand Cru lies between the village of Morey-Saint-Denis to the south and Gevrey-Chambertin to the north, where the slope varies greatly, ranging from 4 to 23%. The plot ranges in altitude from 276 to 308 meters. The locality faces east. The soil changes from east to west. In the eastern part, the reddish-brown soil is about 40 to 50 cm thick, with many angular-to-blunt limestone fragments. Upslope, in the western part of the Grand Cru, the soil contains a great deal of angular limestone gravel. Two types of substratum underlie the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru. In the eastern part, fine-grained Premeaux limestone, light in color, with patches of flint-like chert nodules (chailles), crops out in beds tens of centimeters thick. In the western part, where the slope is steep, the bedded limestone scree (grèzes litées) lining the slope is composed of small angular Comblanchien limestone fragments.

This is aromatically similar to the Clos St. Denis but even more floral. Here too there is a wonderfully attractive mouthfeel on the powerful, muscular and dense broad-shouldered flavors that are also blessed with an abundance of dry extract that buffers the massively persistent finale. This terrific effort is a blend of power and refinement and a wine that should age accordingly. A "wow" wine and on the better wines of the vintage. Score: 94-97, Burghound.com, Issue 85: 10 January 2022, Drink: 2037+

The Finer Details
Style - Red Wine
Varietal - Pinot Noir
Country - France
Region - Burgundy
Vintage - 2020
Bottle Size - 750ml
ABV - 13.5%

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0043/9258/3217/files/domaine-dujac-clos-de-la-roche-grand-cru-2020.png?v=1682660303
https://kentstreetcellars.co.nz/collections/the-collectors-list-exclusive-australian-international-wines.oembed?page=5
