Its appearance retains a deep purple/ruby color with only subtle signs of aging. On the nose, it displays explosive aromatics, accompanied by a level of refinement and freshness that is not commonly found in the Barossa Valley. On the palate, it delivers robust fruit flavors that are well-integrated and rich, with a luscious jammy quality. The wine maintains its elegance and remains as spectacular as ever. While it can easily continue to age for another 5 years, it is currently at its peak drinking stage. The savory sweet fruit profile is accompanied by a rich and chewy texture. The tannins have softened, and the oak integration is seamless. Pleasant fruit notes, earthy undertones, and hints of eucalyptus mingle harmoniously with the integrated wood and tannins. The wine offers a nice length and a well-rounded character. Its high viscosity is notable. The palate reveals explosive flavors of jammy black fruits such as black cherries and elderberries, complemented by touches of tart raspberries, tobacco, leather, mint, and meaty notes. There is also a distinct dark mineral nuance. Despite its full-bodied nature, the wine maintains impeccable balance, with the high alcohol content harmoniously concealed beneath the freshness and abundance of fruit. It retains a medium level of acidity and tannins, creating a cohesive and harmonious experience. The finish is long, showcasing plenty of freshness.

Medium-bodied; classic exercise in restraint; an array of black fruits on a long palate; fine, savoury tannins; minimal oak. - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion, 94 points

A crisp, elegant, refreshing style of Shiraz made from 60- to 140-year-old vines, the 2002 vintage, according to winemaker Chris Ringland, produced wines of elegance and crisp acidity because of the long growing season. With its dark ruby colour, this wine presents delightful and enticing aromas of sweet black fruit, chocolate, floral notes of lavender, and earthy undertones. With a touch of vanilla oak and a slight earthy fungal tone, the aromas become more prominent as the wine breathes. On the palate, it offers a full-bodied experience with flavors of black fruit, including blackberry, boysenberry, and cassis, along with hints of chocolate and blackberry jam. There is also a floral character and earthy elements reminiscent of forest floor, complemented by high acidity and medium-soft tannins that lead to a long finish with notes of black pepper and tar. This wine is of exceptional quality and represents the kind of Barossa Shiraz that is highly enjoyable. It exhibits good fruitiness with additional complexity and is far from being overwhelming. With further aging, it will continue to develop beautifully.

Nearly 30 parcels of old, dry-grown fruit from some of the finest grape-growing families in the Barossa. Many years later, when I worked at Seppelt’s Rutherglen, I met Colin Preece, the master responsible for the great old wines. Ever since, I’ve wanted to make a wine of my own that reflected his attitude and technique. This is it: Black Shiraz matured in seasoned oak, revitalised by bottle fermentation, left on lees before disgorgement and liqueuring, and then put straight back into the cellar. You’d be doing us both a favour if you left it there a bit longer so it can really show its best. The fruit selection from different parts of the valley, along with consistent quality and minimal intervention in winemaking, has resulted in a medium-bodied yet rich and beautifully long-lasting wine of immense quality. On the palate, it is juicy and fleshy, with a touch of residual sugar. Flavors of blackberry, plum, and sweet spice come through, accompanied by talc-textured tannins that provide a persistent and dense yet balanced mouthfeel. There is a subtle farmyard note and a warming sensation of alcohol on the finish, which adds to its appeal. Founded in the early 1980s by Robert O'Callaghan, the winery has become well-known for producing exceptional Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. O'Callaghan's journey in winemaking began in 1965 when he started as a trainee winemaker at Seppelt in Rutherglen, Victoria. In 1971, he moved to Barossa and purchased two hectares of land under the Barossa ranges, where he planted vines and built a winery that resembled a 1850s stone cottage. Rockford's first vintage was in 1984, and since then, the winery has been working in partnership with several independent wine growers around Barossa, with vineyards in Kalimna, Ebenezer, Moppa Springs, the Eden Valley and central Barossa. This partnership has allowed Rockford to have access to a wide variety of soil types, mesoclimates and altitudes for its grapes. Many of the vines are planted on their own rootstocks and some are up to 130 years old, which gives the grapes an intense and concentrated flavour. The winemaking process at Rockford is traditional, using basket presses, open-topped slate fermenters, and a 1880s petrol-driven Bagshaw destemmer/crusher. Rockford's flagship wine is its Basket Press Shiraz, which is aged for two years in French and American oak hogshead barrels before release. The wine has become one of Australia's most sought-after wines and has consistently received high scores from critics. Apart from the Basket Press Shiraz, Rockford has several other top wines in its portfolio, including the Rifle Range Cabernet Sauvignon, the Sparkling Black Shiraz and the Rod and Spur Cabernet-Shiraz blend. With its dedication to traditional winemaking techniques and partnerships with independent wine growers, Rockford Wines has established itself as one of Australia's most respected wineries.

The Barossa Valley in Australia is home to the oldest Syrah vines on the planet, with some dating back 140 to 175 years. The region has never been threatened by phylloxera, and the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is almost equivalent to that in France. Australian Shiraz has intense flavours and aromas of blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. The valley comprises two sub-regions, Eden Valley and the warmer Barossa Valley floor and has a warm Mediterranean climate. The area is home to Australia's largest concentration of old-vine Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre and the very best Australian Shiraz from the Barossa Valley will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.

Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is a wine that pays tribute to the rich heritage of the Barossa Valley. The wine is the brainchild of Robert O'Callaghan, who sources grapes from 60 to 140-year-old dry-grown vineyards across a range of Barossa soils, altitudes and micro-climates. The wine represents a rare and important post-colonial Australian aesthetic, with a soft and medium-bodied style that echoes the landscape of the Barossa and references the great mid 20th-century wines of legendary winemaker Colin Preece. The winemaking process for Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is labour-intensive and involves classic Barossa techniques. The fruit is handpicked and then vinified using a wooden Bagshaw crusher from the 19th century, open fermentation and basket pressing. The wine is matured primarily in seasoned 300-litre French and American oak hogsheads and 2500-litre vats for two years. The resulting wine is neatly juxtaposed between powerful and elegant, with exquisite dark berry fruits, inky complexity, underlying roasted chestnut notes and long, muscular but precise tannins. The wine is beautifully tensioned, making it one of Australia's greatest and most-loved wines. Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is a true representation of the Barossa Valley's rich heritage and culture of craftsmanship. The meticulous attention to detail and labour-intensive winemaking practices have resulted in a wine that is both powerful and elegant, making it a must-try for any wine enthusiast.

Rockford Basket Press Shiraz 1999 is a wonderful red wine that embodies the unique Australian traditional style, featuring full black fruit flavours, silky tannins and an integrated vanilla oak bouquet that complements the wine's overall complexity. The wine has a medium crimson colour and intense aromas of Turkish delight, musky plum and chocolate. It is beautifully concentrated, with blackberry, Turkish delight and plummy fruit flavours intertwined with fine, soft tannins that finish long and sweet. This wine is a fine ripe and luscious red, steeped in heady aromas of briary small red and blackberry fruit and enhanced by a measured maturation in smoky chocolate/vanilla oak. The palate is velvet-smooth and creamy, presenting layer upon layer of ripe cassis, plum and red berry fruit, punctuated by the musky white pepper and liquorice flavours of old Barossa vines. The wine is beautifully balanced, making it a must-try for anyone looking for a traditional Australian red that is anything but ordinary. Overall, Rockford Basket Press Shiraz 1999 is sure to impress any wine enthusiast with its unique character, full ripe black fruit flavours and beautifully balanced tannins.

This still young, full-bodied, pure, incredibly rich 1999 exhibits a kinky nose of Asian spices, ground pepper, flowers, and autumnal forest floor notes. Right in the Rockford groove; deftly combining rich fruit with a sense of restraint and earthy complexity. Speaks to its region but also to over 50 years of honing the craft in the winery. I get tired of hearing myself banging on about how good cabernet shiraz (or shiraz cabernet) blends are, but here I go again. This wine has irresistible drinkability. Again, elegant and savoury are two words that spring immediately to mind. In some vintages the shiraz leads this wine; this one, on the day, seemed to be showing its cabernet more. But the good thing is that warm-region blends of these two grapes splice together beautifully and don’t tend to allow one of the varieties to dominate. This is probably why cabernet shiraz blends are more successful in warm climates than cool: in cooler climates the varietal characters speak more loudly and tend to clash instead of fitting together like pieces of a puzzle – which is what happens with wines like Rod &Spur. - Huon Hooke, The Real Review

The Finer Details
Style - Red Wine
Varietal - Shiraz 67%, Cabernet Sauvignon 33%
Country - Australia
Region - Barossa Valley, South Australia
Vintage - 2018
Bottle Size - 750ml
ABV - 13.8%

Rifle Range Road which runs parallel to Krondorf Road, is in the heart of the Valley Floor and winds its way up the hills to Kaiser Stuhl National Park. This is it: Black Shiraz matured in seasoned oak, revitalised by bottle fermentation, left on lees before disgorgement and liqueuring, and then put straight back into the cellar. You’d be doing us both a favour if you left it there a bit longer so it can really show its best. But watch your kids. - Robert O'Callaghan, Winemaker

The Finer Details
Style - Sparkling Wine
Varietal - Shiraz
Country - Australia
Region - Barossa Valley
Disgorged - 2020
Bottle Size - 750ml
ABV - 13.9%
Closure - Cork

Discover the essence of Barossa Valley's heart in Tanunda at Rockford, where a legacy of tantalizing taste experiences has been crafted since the 1980s. The journey begins with hand-picked fruit, carefully selected for its optimal ripeness and quality. Following this, classic Barossa techniques come into play, including the utilization of a 19th-century wooden Bagshaw crusher, open fermentation, and the time-honoured method of basket pressing. As the wine matures, it is nurtured in seasoned 300-litre French and American oak hogsheads, along with 2500-litre vats, allowing it to develop and evolve over a period of two years. This patient process ensures that the wine attains a remarkable balance, as the oak imparts its subtle influence, enhancing the complexity and depth of flavors.

The result is a wine that embodies the rich heritage and craftsmanship of its winemaking techniques. It’s full-bodied, has good concentration, and while the tannin is perhaps a little drying, it’s early days for it, of course. Coffee and iodine, silty tannin on finish of good intensity and length. Thick and sure-footed, it’s a good release, though not top shelf. - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, 93 Points.

The Finer Details
Style - Red Wine
Varietal - Shiraz
Country - Australia
Region - Barossa Valley, South Australia
Vintage - 2019
Bottle Size - 750ml
ABV - 14.1%
Closure - Cork

This, quite simply, is a great sparkling Shiraz, inspired by the Sparkling Burgundies of Colin Preece at Great Western, and made using fundamentally the same techniques.
