Bannockburn Vineyards, founded by Stuart Hooper, continues to thrive today, with a commitment to quality and organic farming practices. The soil variations range from volcanic surface debris to ancient sea beds, layered over limestone bedrock. The first vineyard was planted in 1974, making the vines some of the oldest in the Geelong region. The Moorabool Valley, where the vineyards are located, has an average annual rainfall of 540mm, primarily occurring in winter and spring. The region benefits from a maritime influence, resulting in mild temperatures and long sunshine hours. The stable, dry and low-humidity conditions during the grape-growing season allow for a mild and extended ripening period, ideal for healthy vines and gradual flavour development. Proudly, a wine style that hasn’t succumbed to the dictates of fashion or commerce. St Henri is rich and plush when young, gaining soft, earthy, mocha-like characters with age. What was once a nursery block on the Hill of Grace vineyard is now very much a wine of its own individual style defined by the most attractive florals, red fruits, ease of style and an underlying, deceptive power. Deep aromas of red fruits, plum, dark berries, lifted aromatic violet, fivespice, cassia bark, wood smoke and earth. Spices are integral to the Hill of Roses style and here they shine. Tannins are supple - deceptively so - because they are also structurally solid forming the basis for not only a wine of beauty but also substance.” 99 points - Jeni Port, The Vintage Journal

“The 2022 Hill of Roses Shiraz is eminently red-fruited, and this really aligns with my previous perceptions of this wine…each year the vines grow more, and the wine becomes darker, more powerful and more intense. However, it still retains its red-fruited heart throughout all the versions of climate and vintage. This is lighter, fresher and fluffier than the Hill of Grace Shiraz, and the tannins are “easier” somehow.” 98 points – Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

“There is good integration throughout, and the nose does give notes of chocolate, mocha, coffee beans, blackberries and blueberries, aniseed, cloves, cassis and cocoa powder. This is a stunning Hill of Roses, with complexity already evident, great length and perfect balance through to silky, cashmere-like tannins. A seductive and alluring texture completes the picture. Pristine and taut, this will be a star over the next thirty years. First released in 1980, the wine has become one of Australia’s benchmark Shiraz-Cabernet blends, combining regional richness with remarkable finesse and age-worthiness. The 2023 vintage is composed of 65% Shiraz, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, sourced from selected vineyards across the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Matured for approximately 18 months in a combination of seasoned French and American oak hogsheads, the wine balances fruit purity with subtle oak influence. The warm, dry conditions of the 2023 growing season produced fruit with excellent concentration, structure and aromatic complexity.

The resulting wine is deeply perfumed and expressive, revealing layers of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum alongside notes of bay leaf, tobacco, cedar and spice. On the palate, it combines generosity and elegance, offering a seamless interplay between ripe fruit, savoury complexity and finely integrated tannins. The Cabernet components contribute structure and freshness, while the Shiraz provides richness and depth. A vibrant acid line carries the wine through a long, balanced finish marked by dark berries, spice and earthy nuances. Although approachable in its youth, the 2023 vintage possesses the pedigree and structure to reward careful cellaring over the next decade or more. Offers a nice mix of Shiraz-lead ripe plums and blackberries married to Cabernet’s cassis, herbs and leaves and tied in unison by woody spices, red earth notes, dried flowers and cocoa. Maybe there is less savouriness this vintage compared to previous years; the ’23 seems more fruit-filled and buoyant in mood.
